The Dog Rose Trust has many years of experience in the production and management of projects in audio and working with a wide range of people. The Trust developed the unique Acoustic Fingerprint guides, with the project Cathedrals Through Touch and Hearing, which give the maximum amount of spatial and contextual information to people with visual impairments.
The Trust also uses the concept of multi-sensory design to produce interactive tactile models and plans with sound commentaries for people who are blind and visually impaired, using the latest technology. These projects include Chester Cathedral, The Houses of Parliament, Glasgow Cathedral Precinct, The Belgrade Theatre Coventry and the Forestry Commission. Current clients include the Phoenix Initiative in Coventry, RSPB, English Nature in Somerset and Somerset County Council, The Shropshire Hills Countryside Unit and English Nature in Shropshire.
Past audio projects carried out by the Trust include Acoustic Fingerprint guides for 10 English Cathedrals the National Trust and English Heritage. The Trust is a consultant to English Heritage, English Nature and RSPB among other organisations such as local authorities. Multi-lingual work, including script writing, was carried out at Brecknock Museum. Current audio projects are for The British Museum and York City Centre.
The Trust's contacts and working partners in a range of projects include the Deputy Head of the Media Department at the University of Central England, the Professor of Sound from New York State University at Poughkeepsie, the University of York's Electronics Department, and actors from BBC Radio 4's The Archers.
As a result of this experience, in 2003 an application was submitted for a Your Heritage grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for work on audio projects with three community groups.
One of the aims of this work was to help them produce a 'bank' or store of sound that they could use in presentations for their venues. Other aims were to encourage the groups to understand and appreciate their environments through the use multi-sensory design; this would help everyone, whatever their ability, to enjoy their heritage.
The three projects are:
1. Sound and tactile interpretation at the Coalport China Museum, Coalport, Shropshire
2. Interpreting the historic environment through sound and touch at the Mere, in Ellesmere, Shropshire
3. The background to the Mystery Plays with the Shysters Theatre Company, Coventry.
